Trump Grabs Melania’s Hand, Releases It - Here’s Why (Photos)

President Donald Trump and his wife Melania have been engaged in a long-distance relationship. While the couple spent a great deal of time apart when Mr. Trump was on the campaign trail, the POTUS moved into the White House alone upon taking office. The First Lady announced she would be staying in New York City, at least until their son finished out the school year. New mindless controversies are now swirling around their public appearances, and the couple's hand-holding practices.

Photos and videos show many instances in which the president didn't hold his wife's hand, and one particularly awkward moment on the tarmac in Palm Beach. The couple had been separated for a while, so the First Lady waited to greet him as he disembarked Air Force One. She kissed him and took his hand. He held hands with her briefly, then let go.

President Trump clapped along with his greeters briefly. When he was done, Melania went to grab his hand once more. He patted her hand twice, and dropped it yet again.
"What's going on here," the prying eyes of the world wonder. Speculations abound.

A body language expert says the president drops his wife's hand when the two enter a public arena because he wants to be the uber-alpha male president, according to the Daily Mail.

"Typically a hand-hold shows a couple as a unit," said body language expert Patti Wood to the Daily Mail. "But to me, I think he's been saying, 'I want to be seen as the president on my own', which is very much alpha. 'I want to be just the powerful me.' And it's clear that that's his choice."

"Holding hands can communicate so much about an individual and a couple, depending on the position of the hands, who reaches in first, who breaks it first," continues Wood. "What's fascinating, I think to all of us, is that they're holding hands at all. They hold hands in private, so we know that there's a coupleness that we weren't seeing in public or at the inauguration."

It really isn't any surprise to anyone that the president likes to be seen as a powerful Alpha male. Often the president walks ahead of the first lady. It caused a stir on inauguration day when he got out of the car to greet former President Obama and First Lady Michelle alone, leaving Melania to get out of the car by herself and trail behind him. News articles noted that he didn't wait to escort her.

But while Mr. Trump might want to keep his distance, Wood points out that the First Lady doesn't want to. "It's very clear that she does, she would like that. That would make her feel connected and she would get some of that power and confidence, and he's saying 'No, not in public.'"
