Trump: GOP Chairman Did Not Chastise Me

Donald Trump is denying reports that Reince Preibus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, has asked him to stop making inflammatory comments about Mexican immigrants.

The presidential candidate told reporters Thursday that Preibus “knows better than to lecture me … we’re not dealing with a five-star Army general,” Salon reported. He refuted a story by The Washington Post that quoted “GOP donors familiar with Priebus’ thinking” as having said the chairman urged Trump to “tone it down.” The telephone conversation reportedly lasted about an hour, though Trump said it was more like 10 minutes.

An anonymous source, described only as a Republican, told CNN that Priebus concluded the discussion by saying: “Look, I’ve gotta tell you, I spent four years trying to make inroads with the Hispanic community … how we address illegal immigration is very important.”

Trump maintained that “it was more of a congratulatory call,” according to the New York Times. He claimed that Priebus said to him: “Wow, you’re really doing well in the polls. You really hit a nerve; keep going. It could be that you’ll be number one in the polls.”

Salon reported that after the Republicans lost the 2012 presidential election, Priebus concluded that his party needed to reach out to Latino voters.
