Trump: Freedom Is A Gift From God

Preachers and religious organizations should have the right to endorse political candidates, President Trump proposed Thursday at the National Prayer Breakfast.

According to Breitbart News, he pledged to advocate repeal of the Johnson Amendment, which makes such endorsements illegal under the Constitution’s separation of church and state clause.

Trump also defended his recent executive actions concerning immigration. He signed orders to temporarily turn away war refugees, as well as travelers from seven primarily Islamic nations. In addition, he threatened to deny federal funding to “sanctuary” cities that refuse to enforce U.S. immigration laws; and attacked the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which delays the deportation of foreigners who arrived as minors. The actions sparked protests in dozens of U.S. cities, and condemnation from Democrats and some Republicans.

“We will not allow a beachhead of intolerance to spread in our nation,” the president vowed. “In the coming days, we will develop a system to help ensure that those admitted into our country fully embrace our values of religious and personal liberty, and that they reject any form of oppression and discrimination. We want people to come into our nation, but we want people to love us and to love our values, not to hate us and to hate our values.”

Trump told the crowd of faith leaders: “The world is in trouble, but we’re going to straighten it out. That’s what I do. I fix things. We’re going the straighten it out. Believe me. … America will thrive as long as we continue to have faith in each other and faith in God. That faith in God has inspired men and women to sacrifice for the needy, to deploy to wars overseas, and lock arms at home to ensure equal rights for every man, woman and child in our land.”

The president argued that “our republic was formed on the basis that freedom is not a gift from government, but that freedom is a gift from God.” He also praised his mother for the guidance she provided him.
