Trump Expresses Disagreements With Pope

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump, during a CNN interview Thursday, challenged Pope Francis on two major issues: immigration and climate change.

CBS News reported that the billionaire candidate was responding to the pontiff’s speech the previous day, when he said the United States should “not be afraid to welcome” immigrants.

“Well, I think his words are beautiful and I respect the pope and I like the pope very much,” Trump remarked. “I will say this, we have a country that is going through tremendous problems. We owe $19 trillion. So number one, we can’t afford this process.”

The real-estate tycoon, who continues to lead a crowded pack of contenders for the GOP nomination, also differed with the pope on the urgency of dealing with climate change. “I’m not a believer in climate change,” Trump declared, disputing the vast majority of scientists who say the phenomenon is happening and that human activities are largely responsible.

During the interview, Trump slammed one of his rival candidates, Marco Rubio, who has been surging in the polls. He called the Florida senator a “kid” who “shouldn’t even be running in this race,” according to CBS News.

“I know about Syria more than Marco Rubio knows about Syria,” Trump said, adding that the senator’s attendance record in Washington indicates he “doesn’t work” or is “too lazy” to show up for votes.
