Trump Excuses Pence’s Vote For Iraq Invasion: ‘I Don’t Care'

Though Donald Trump frequently blasts Hillary Clinton’s support for the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, he is giving his running mate a pass for having taken the same position.

During an interview on CBS’ “60 Minutes” on Sunday, the apparent Republican presidential nominee responded to a question about Mike Pence backing the invasion when he was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. “I don’t care,” Trump said. “It’s a long time ago, and he voted that way and they were also misled. A lot of information was given to people.”

The Hill pointed out that the billionaire businessman has accused Clinton, his likely opponent in November’s election, of “bad judgment” for giving President George W. Bush authorization to send troops into Iraq. On Sunday, Trump claimed he was “one of the few that was right on Iraq” when he opposed the invasion. He declared that the ensuing war was “handled so badly” by the Bush administration.

However, Trump argued that Pence is “entitled to make a mistake every once in a while.” Reporter Lesley Stahl, referring to Clinton, asked: “She’s not?” Trump replied: “No, she’s not.” Clinton voted for the invasion while she was serving as a U.S. senator from New York. Pence is now the governor of Indiana.
