Trump Defends His ‘Flexible’ Political Beliefs

Donald Trump, under fire for shifting his positions on various issues over the years, argued Thursday night during the Republican presidential debate in Michigan that “you have to be flexible.”

“I’ve never seen a successful person who wasn’t flexible and who didn’t have a certain degree of flexibility,” the front-running GOP candidate said. “If you're going to be one way and you think it’s wrong, does that mean the rest of your life you have to go in the wrong direction because you don’t want to change?”

The Hill reported that Fox News’ Megyn Kelly, one of the debate moderators, referred to video footage of Trump changing his stances on the U.S. occupation of Afghanistan and the relocation of Syrian war refugees to the United States. He once supported allowing Syrians into the country, but has since called for a temporary ban on all Muslim immigration. He now advocates the establishment of “safe zones” for refugees in the Middle East.

“When they were talking about thousands and thousands (of refugees), I changed my tune, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong about that,” Trump said.

The billionaire businessman also has changed his position on abortion. Formerly pro-choice, he now claims to be pro-life.
