Trump Defends Carson; Calls Cruz Tactics ‘Dirty’

Ted Cruz “insulted” fellow Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson in the Iowa caucuses, according to Donald Trump.

The Hill reported that the billionaire businessman, during a news conference in New Hampshire this week, accused Cruz of using “dirty” tactics. He was referring to a mailer the Texas senator’s campaign sent to Iowa voters. The literature suggested that people would be guilty of a “voter violation” if they failed to attend the caucuses.

Trump also criticized Iowa Rep. Steve King, who has endorsed Cruz, for tweeting just before the caucuses that Carson was planning to drop out of the race. The congressman urged the retired brain surgeon’s supporters to switch their allegiance to Cruz. The two candidates were competing for the support of evangelicals, who made up 62 percent of the Republicans who caucused.

“What (Cruz) did to Ben Carson was a disgrace,” Trump declared. “(It) certainly was dirty. What he did to Ben Carson was terrible. When they said Ben Carson is out of the race and come vote for him, I thought it was terrible.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Cruz apologized to the Carson campaign and claimed the tweet was a “mistake,” according to The Hill.

Cruz won the caucuses, with Trump finishing second. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio was third, followed by Carson in a distant fourth place.
