Trump: Clinton’s Praise Of NFL Protesters Shows Why She Lost Election

President Trump slammed Hillary Clinton on Monday for defending professional football players who refuse to stand for the national anthem before games.

According to Politico, Trump accused Clinton of being “very disrespectful to our country” when she explained that the players are protesting racial inequities. “That’s what black athletes kneeling was all about. That’s not against our anthem or our flag,” the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee said Sunday during her trip to London. “Actually, kneeling is a reverent position. It was to demonstrate in a peaceful way against racism and injustice in our criminal system.”

At a press conference, Trump responded: “Well, that’s why she lost the election. I mean, honestly, it's that thinking, that is the reason she lost the election. When you go down and take a knee or any other way, you're sitting, essentially for our great national anthem. If Hillary Clinton actually made the statement that, in a form, sitting down during the playing of our great national anthem is not disrespectful, then I fully understand why she didn't win.”

He continued: “I mean, look, there are a lot of reasons she didn't win, including the fact that she was not good at what she did. But I will tell you, that is something that I had just heard about, and I think that her statement in itself is very disrespectful to our country.”

The protests began in August 2016, when former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sat during “The Star Spangled Banner” before a pre-season National Football League game. He told reporters he was expressing his outrage about multiple incidents of white police officers killing unarmed black men. Only a few players followed his example, until Trump made the protests a bigger issue by criticizing the athletes.

The president recently declared that NFL team owners should fire any “son of a b***h who refuses to stand. Trump also urged the league’s commissioner to adopt a policy banning political demonstrations. “The NFL should have suspended some of these players for one game – not fire them – suspend them for one game,” he said. “And then if they did it again, it could have been two games, then three games, then for the season. You wouldn’t have people disrespecting our country right now.”

The first Sunday following those remarks, more than 100 players sat or knelt. Clinton accused Trump of sending “very clear dog-whistles” to his supporters. The president suggested Monday that players should find another way to protest. “There’s plenty of time to do knees, and there’s plenty of time to do lots of other things,” he said. Trump repeated his wish for Clinton to challenge him in the 2020 election. “I hope Hillary runs,” he declared. “Is she going to run? I hope! Hillary, please run again!” Fox News noted that the former secretary of state continues to insist she is not interested in another campaign for public office.

Kaepernick left the 49ers at the end of last season, when his contract expired. He is still looking for a job, and alleging that owners are conspiring to keep him out of the NFL.
