Trump Campaign Prepares For A Potential 2020 Presidential Fight Against Elizabeth Warren

President Trump, looking forward to his re-election bid in 2020, reportedly is worried about a challenge by Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

According to The Hill, administration aides are conducting research on the Massachusetts Democrat and taking track of her actions on Capitol Hill. The staffers, as well as Republican National Committee officials, have been giving the news media memos ridiculing the senator.

Warren, a rising star in the Democratic Party who champions progressive causes, is one of Trump’s most outspoken critics. In April, she slammed the president for ordering an attack on Afghanistan with the largest non-nuclear bomb in the U.S. military’s arsenal. An administration official was quick to refute her comments, explaining: “As somebody who is probably, in the hearts and minds of liberal activists, a leader of the party, that voice carries some weight, and we have to respond. We don’t think ignoring her is the right approach.”

Trump has frequently dismissed Warren as “Pocahontas,” a reference to the senator’s claim of being descended from the Cherokee tribe. During a recent speech to the National Rifle Association, the president declared: “I have a feeling that in the next election, you’re going to be swamped with candidates. It may be Pocahontas, remember that.”

Warren has not indicated whether she will seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020. “I am running, in 2018, for senator from Massachusetts,” she said last month on NBC’s “Today” show. “I am deeply blessed that the people of the Commonwealth sent me to Washington to fight for them, and that’s what I’ll keep on doing.”

Former Trump campaign aide Sam Nunberg told The Hill: “Elizabeth Warren is the perfect foil for the Trump administration. I always thought she would be the new Rosie (O’Donnell.) Our base hates her; we think she’s a joke. She’s somebody to galvanize us. It was very smart for the president to bring her up at the NRA.”

The Huffington Post reported earlier this year that Warren had a national approval rating of 38 percent. Thirty-one percent of survey respondents gave her a negative rating.
