Trump Calls For Spending Cuts On Everything Except The Military

Donald Trump pledged Monday that if he becomes the next president, he will advocate budget reductions for all government operations other than the Pentagon.

“I like the concept of the Penny Plan; not for the military, because the military we have to build up,” the leading contender for the Republican nomination told Sean Hannity on Fox News. Newsmax noted that the talk-show host is an outspoken advocate of the Penny Plan, which calls for a 1 percent annual reduction in federal expenditures for five years to balance the government’s spending with its revenue.

“It’s a pretty good plan, and it’s a pretty simple plan,” Trump said, adding that appropriations to some programs could be cut by more than 1 percent.

According to onecentsolution.org, the Penny Plan entails limiting government spending to 18 percent of federal income after the five-year period. The website predicted that Congress could decrease expenditures by $7.5 trillion in a decade, and balance the budget by 2019.

“Instead of using inflated budget ‘baselines’ to claim nonexistent spending cuts, a common practice in Washington, the One Cent Solution calls for real cuts,” states an explanation on the site. “The sum of all discretionary and entitlement spending will have to go down from one year to the next, by 1 percent or more.”
