Trump Breaking Tradition Of Accepting Election Results - This Letter Proves It

Donald Trump’s apparent threat, during the presidential debate Wednesday night, to question the validity of the election’s outcome showed how bitter politics have become.

When debate moderator Chris Wallace of Fox News asked the Republican nominee whether he will accept the results even if he loses to Democrat Hillary Clinton, he shocked political pundits and voters by responding: “I will look at it at the time. I will keep you in suspense.” According to multiple media sources, it was the first time a major-party candidate has made such a statement.

Time pointed out that the situation is much different than in 1993, after President George H.W. Bush lost his re-election bid to Bill Clinton. In a friendly letter to the newly elected Democrat that he left in the Oval Office, the 41st commander-in-chief wrote: “I wish you great happiness here. You will be our president when you read this note. I wish you well. I wish your family well. Your success is now our country’s success. I am rooting for you.”

The letter, which is featured in the elder Bush’s presidential library, became more widely known when Hillary Clinton posted it on Instagram in June. The note went viral on Twitter after Wednesday’s debate, according to Time.
