Trump: Ban Muslims Because ‘They’re Sick People’

The United States should temporarily turn away Muslim immigrants because some of them could be “sick people” seeking to commit terrorist acts, Donald Trump argued Sunday on Fox News.

The GOP presidential front-runner has been forced to defend his proposal because of widespread criticism by Democrats and his fellow Republicans. Even conservatives like former Vice President Dick Cheney and House Speaker Paul Ryan have denounced the plan. Trump fired back at Ryan: “He’s big on amnesty. That’s not the kind of thinking we need. We need strong leaders.”

The real-estate tycoon indicated that he is not surprised his idea of imposing a religious test on immigrants has elicited ridicule. “I knew there would be a storm,” he said, while insisting that Americans need to be protected from violent extremists. He cited the recent mass shooting in San Bernardino, Calif., that resulted in 14 deaths. One of the alleged assailants was a woman from Pakistan who reportedly praised ISIS on the Internet.

“They’re sick people,” Trump said. “There are a group of people who are a risk.”

Despite his controversial proposal, or perhaps because of it, the billionaire has been rising in national polls of Republican voters. A recent survey by Monmouth University indicated he had 35 percent support, far more than his nearest rivals.
