Trump Backs His Campaign Manager After He's Charged With Battery

Reporter Michelle Fields claimed Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski assaulted her by yanking her arm so violently that she lost her balance and almost hit the floor. Fields filed charges against Lewandowski and tweeted a photo of her arm that appears to show bruises. According to Trump, Lewandowski is a family man who is being 'maligned' by an opportunistic reporter.

Police released video footage that shows Fields, who was racing along firing questions at Trump, being pulled back by Lewandowski as he passed her. She doesn't appear to be off-balance, nor does she look like she's about to fall-- she just stands there, seemingly stunned.

"How do you know those bruises weren’t there before?” Trump said to reporters from his private plane. “If you’re going to get squeezed, wouldn’t you let out a scream or something? ... How did they get here? Who put them there? I don’t know, I’m not a lawyer.”

According to Trump, Fields was the one accosting him as he walked. “She was grabbing me,” he said, speculating on whether he should possibly press charges.

Many Trump detractors have come forward to slam him for running a dirty campaign. Ted Cruz, who trails Trump for the GOP presidential nomination, said, "This is the consequence of the culture of the Trump campaign, the abusive culture, when you have a campaign that is built on personal insults, on attacks and now physical violence.”

Not everyone is sympathetic with Fields, however. Piers Morgan, in an article appearing in the Daily Mail, criticized Fields for her response to what he says looks like a one-second arm tug from a campaign manager trying to protect his candidate.

"Like every journalist I know, I’ve spent much of my career being pushed, shoved, elbowed and barged in crowded places when trying to get near famous people," Morgan wrote. "It goes with the territory."

According to Morgan, a male reporter would have been made a laughing stock for complaining about an incident like that.

But it doesn’t really matter if Fields was violently attacked, or crying wolf. If it serves an agenda, the incident will be exploited.
