Trump Allegedly Disrespects Vice President’s Christian Faith

President Trump likes to make fun of Vice President Pence’s religious beliefs, according to the New Yorker.

The publication reported that Trump frequently asks those who have spoken with Pence, “Did Mike make you pray?” The president also has ridiculed the former Indiana governor’s ongoing efforts to reverse Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion. When an authority on the law predicted that most states would keep the medical procedure legal even if the high court overturned Roe, Trump told his vice president: “You see? You’ve wasted all this time and energy on it, and it’s not going to end abortion anyway.”

During a conversation about LGBTQ rights, the president was referring to Pence when he declared: “Don’t ask that guy — he wants to hang them all!” An unidentified source told the New Yorker that Trump enjoys letting Pence “know who’s boss.”

The Independent Journalism Review pointed out that Trump recently became the first president to address the Values Voters Summit. Some of those who attended the event might have been surprised to learn that he has a habit of mocking people of faith. The president’s tone at the conference was dramatically different. “Times have changed ... now they’re changing back,” he told the religious conservatives. “I pledged that in a Trump administration, our nation's religious heritage would be cherished, protected and defended like you have never seen before. That's what's happening, and you see it every day. In America, we don't worship government. We worship God.”

A number of religious leaders criticized Trump during last year’s campaign. The pope said the candidate’s pledge to erect a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border was contrary to the Bible’s teachings. “A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian,” the pontiff said. “This is not in the Gospel.” Others ripped Trump for failing to cite a specific part of the Bible when he was asked about his favorite verse. His stock answer has been: “I wouldn’t want to get into it, because to me that’s very personal.”

Salon noted that Pence is an evangelical with strong ties to the Christian community. The news site described his partnership with Trump as an “odd match,” adding: “That an openly, thrice-married, profane, philandering, irreligious, ex-pro-abortion, miserly glutton somehow convinced a good portion of the U.S. that he was a man of God and a champion of the tenets of evangelism should be considered one of the greatest political coups in modern political history.”

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway insisted last weekend that Trump is “the most faith-centric, pro-life president in our lifetime.” She did not mention former commanders-in-chief Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush, all of whom expressed deep religious faith. Salon pointed out that they, as well as Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, often attended church services.

During the 2016 race for the White House, Trump relied on the support of evangelicals. Many religious conservatives still give him favorable ratings in national polls.
