Trump Admits Healthcare Bill Is Dead - Blames Democrats, Predicts Obamacare Will Fail

The Republican-controlled Congress does not need to repeal Obamacare because the health-insurance program will soon collapse, according to President Trump.

The Hill reported that on Tuesday, Trump acknowledged to reporters at the White House that the GOP replacement for the Affordable Care Act will not pass the Senate. The president said it “will be a lot easier” to wait for the system to fall apart. “I think we're probably in that position where we'll let Obamacare fail,” he said. “We're not going to own it. I'm not going to own it. I can tell you the Republicans are not going to own it. We'll let Obamacare fail and then the Democrats are going to come to us.”

According to Newsmax, Trump tweeted: “We were let down by all of the Democrats and a few Republicans. Most Republicans were loyal, terrific & worked really hard. We will return! … As I have always said, let Obamacare fail and then come together and do a great healthcare plan. Stay tuned!”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced Monday night that the Senate’s version of the House-approved American Health Care Act lacked sufficient support. He made the concession after Mike Lee of Utah and Jerry Moran of Kansas joined fellow Republican senators Rand Paul of Kentucky and Susan Collins of Maine in opposing the measure. That was enough to doom the bill, because the GOP majority in the Senate is a slim 52-48. Democrats, as well as the upper chamber’s two independents, were united against the legislation. ”Regretfully, it is now apparent that the effort to repeal and immediately replace the failure of Obamacare will not be successful,” McConnell said.

Trump complained that when anti-Obamacare Republicans become the majority party in the House and Senate, “they don’t take advantage of it.” He added: “I’m sitting in the Oval Office right next door, pen in hand, waiting to sign something.” Trump noted that conservative politicians have been pledging to shut down the Affordable Care Act for seven years. He said he was “very surprised” by the Senate’s GOP dissenters.

The president argued that his first six months in office have been productive, in spite of the administration’s inability to get major legislation through Congress. Trump claimed that under his leadership, the “war against terrorism” is succeeding and Congress will soon reform the tax system. He has proposed huge tax cuts for the wealthy and funding reduction for programs benefiting the poor. Congressional leaders are not showing any signs of taking action on the plan.

“We’re going to have to go out and get more Republicans elected in ’18,” Trump said. “I’ll be working very hard for that to happen. It would be nice to get Democrat support, but really they are obstructionists. They have no ideas.”

Democrats are excited about the prospect of capturing control of the Senate. They also hope to at least narrow the Republican majority in the House. The party that loses a presidential election usually makes gains in Congress in the mid-term election two years later. Holding the majority in either chamber gives a party the power to hold hearings and subpoena witnesses.
