Trump Accuses Obama’s Attorney General Of Protecting Clinton - Gave Her A "Free Pass"

The Obama administration’s attorney general helped Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in last year’s election by shielding her from prosecution, according to President Trump.

“A.G. (Loretta) Lynch made law-enforcement decisions for political purposes … gave Hillary Clinton a free pass and protection. Totally illegal!” the president tweeted on Tuesday.

The Hill noted that former FBI Director James Comey, during his testimony last week to the Senate Intelligence Committee, also cast doubt on Lynch. He told lawmakers that he had felt “queasy” when the attorney general asked him to call the Clinton email probe a “matter’ instead of an “investigation.” The Clinton campaign was already using the euphemistic term to describe the FBI’s inquiry into whether the former secretary of state compromised classified government information by using a private email server.

California Sen. Dianne Feinstein has called for an investigation to determine whether Lynch pressured Comey to back off the Clinton probe. “I think we need to know more about that,” Feinstein, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said on CNN. “And there’s only one way to know about it, and that’s to have the Judiciary Committee take a look at that. … I would have a queasy feeling, too, though, to be candid with you.”

Fox News reported that on Sunday, Sen. Lindsey Graham said the former attorney general should testify to Congress. “I want to hear from Loretta Lynch,” the South Carolina Republican declared. He said GOP lawmakers would like to question Lynch not only about her contacts with Comey regarding the Clinton investigation, but also her brief meeting with former President Bill Clinton at an Arizona airport during the campaign. Shortly after the conversation, Comey announced he would not recommend that the Justice Department pursue criminal charges against Clinton. The director acknowledged that the airport meeting was a “deciding factor” in his decision to make a public announcement about the email investigation. “There were other things, significant items,” he said.

The top Democrat in the Senate, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, resisted the demand for Lynch to appear on Capitol Hill. He said on “Face the Nation” that he was unsure “whether it rises to the level that she should come and testify.” Schumer explained: “All I’m saying with Loretta Lynch is before anyone jumps to any conclusions, we ought to hear what she has to say, and let her state something privately and see if it makes much of a difference. I don’t know that it will.”

According to The Hill, some Republicans are asking why Comey did not keep notes of his conversations with the attorney general. “I want to see if he had any memos on Loretta Lynch,” GOP Rep. Peter King of New York told Fox News on Sunday. Comey testified that he wrote memos immediately following his meetings with the president to ensure there were detailed accounts of what was said. He remarked that he feared Trump might “lie” about the nature of the discussions.

Comey told the committee that the president “directed” him to end the FBI investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn. He also claimed that Trump demanded his “loyalty,” a charge the president has strongly denied. Trump accused Comey of lying under oath.
