Trump Accused Of Using ISIS-Style Tactics

“Populists and demagogues” like Donald Trump make inflammatory remarks similar to those of the Islamic State terrorist group, according to the United Nations’ chief human-rights official.

The Associated Press reported that Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein on Monday lamented the “banalization of bigotry” by U.S. and European politicians who exploit voters’ dreams of “a fictional halcyon past.” He seemed to be referring to Trump when he slammed the use of Twitter to make simplistic comments.

Zeid also called out Dutch nationalist Geert Wilders, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, hard-line conservative Marine Le Pen of France and Brexit organizer Nigel Farage.

Zeid, who has a Jordanian father and Swedish mother, declared at a dinner in the Hague, Netherlands, hosted by the Peace, Justice and Security Foundation: “Make no mistake, I certainly do not equate the actions of nationalist demagogues with those of Daesh, which are monstrous, sickening; Daesh must be brought to justice.”

The official added: “But in its mode of communication, its use of half-truths and oversimplification, the propaganda of Daesh uses tactics similar to those of the populists. And both sides of this equation benefit from each other -- indeed would not expand in influence without each other’s actions.” (Daesh is an Arabic term for ISIS.)
