Top General Admits ISIS Is ‘Not Contained’

President Obama was wrong last month when he claimed that the Islamic State militant group was “contained,” according to the leader of the United States’ military forces.

“We have not contained ISIL currently,” Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Tuesday while testifying before the House Armed Services Committee.

Fox News noted that Obama, in an ABC News interview one day before the Nov. 13 terrorist attacks in Paris, declared that the Islamic State was not “gaining strength.” He continued: “What is true is that from the start our goal has been first to contain, and we have contained them. They have not gained ground in Iraq. And in Syria, they’ll come in, they’ll leave, but you don’t see this systematic march by ISIL across the terrain.”

Following the shootings and bombings in France, which killed 130 people, an Obama spokesman explained that the president was referring only to the Islamic State’s growth in Iraq and Syria. “They had been on the march in both (countries) for some time but starting a year ago, we were able to halt that expansion,” the spokesman said.

According to Fox News, Defense Secretary Ash Carter told the committee during the same hearing that the Pentagon is sending special ops forces into Syria and increasing the number of such troops in Iraq. He said the soldiers will conduct raids, save hostages, gather information and make arrests.
