Tillerson Quickly Exits Stage Left After Answering A Question He Deemed 'Ridiculous'

The world of politics is inherently gossipy to begin with, but things have been taken to a whole new level since President Donald Trump entered the scene. While there has always been a very active rumor mill emanating from the nation’s capital, the mill is in overdrive now that Trump is in town. During the course of the average political news cycle, there is an ungodly amount of time devoted to leaks, rumors, and generally unsubstantiated information.

While we certainly get that those tasked with covering the White House are reporting the information that has been relayed to them by sources, there’s an incredible rush to judgement these days that leads to improperly vetted information being shared on a willy-nilly basis. We also understand that the news cycle moves quite fast in the modern world, but there still remains a lot to be said for ensuring that all I’s are dotted and T’s are crossed before going public with information.

Since Trump took office, there have been a countless number of times in which so-called ‘bombshell’ stories circulated like wildfire, and an inordinate number of them have later been proven to be completely false. We get it. Mistakes happen, but we’ve seen far too many large ones made in reporting on the Trump administration. Is it any wonder that trust in media is at an all-time low among average American voters?

Many members of the Trump administration are pretty sick of it, and their responses to rumors and innuendo are becoming even more blunt as a result. As AOL shares, that’s the tactic that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson took while speaking with reporters prior to a meeting with French foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian. A French reporter asked him about one popular rumor that just won’t go away, and the result was a rather awkward exchange.

"Bonjour, Monsieur Secretary. Secretary Tillerson, have you already submitted a letter of resignation with an effective date in January?" the reporter asked.

"That's ridiculous," he replied, before swiftly leaving the podium.

"Thank you," replied the reporter.

In fairness to the reporter, a countless number of mainstream outlets have been blaring that information from the rooftops as if it was a stone cold fact. Just last month, the rumor mill suggested that Tillerson’s resignation was imminent, and that Trump had already zeroed in on candidates to replace Tillerson with. Several weeks have passed by since then, and it’s quite clear that substantial liberties were taken with the definition of the word imminent.

Does this mean that Tillerson isn’t going anywhere? Not necessarily. He may very well have decided to move on at some agreed upon date, and the Trump administration will announce that if and when the time draws near. It could also be a sign that the rumors of his exit are completely unfounded, but we’ll have to wait and see how that ultimately plays out. In any event, the leaker or source that felt the need to share this information with a reporter has not done anything noble here whatsoever.

The office of the Secretary of State has been weakened on the international stage due to unconfirmed reports, and that’s not good for our country as a whole. If foreign dignitaries believe that Tillerson is going to be out the door any second, exactly how willing are they going to be to engage in meaningful negotiations with him?
