Thirsty President Has An Embarrassing 'Little Marco' Moment

Donald Trump, who made fun of Sen. Marco Rubio for drinking water during a speech in last year’s presidential campaign, learned Wednesday what it is like to get thirsty while on camera.

The president was telling television viewers about his recent trip to Asia, claiming he made deals in Japan to create 17,000 U.S. jobs, when he apparently felt dryness in his throat. According to reporters who witnessed the speech, in the White House Diplomatic Room, Trump was having difficulty breathing. He suddenly paused in delivering his prepared statement, bending over and looking for a glass of water.

The president resumed his place at the podium and remarked: “They don’t have water. That’s OK.” Apparently addressing one of the people in attendance at the press conference, he added: “What? That’s OK.” But it wasn’t “OK.” Trump, who was obviously still thirsty, bent over to look around once more. When he finally found a bottle of water, he slowly opened it and took a sip.

The Daily Mail reported that it appeared the president expected the water to be inside or under the podium. Instead, staffers had placed the bottle on a table next to the podium. Sated at last, Trump resumed his speech about his 12-day tour of Asian nations, reading from a script: “Japanese manufacturers, Toyota and Mazda ,,,,”

The incident was reminiscent of a humorous event on the 2016 campaign trail, when Rubio got dry mouth while delivering the Republican Party’s response to former President Obama’s “State of the Union” address. The Florida senator, one of Trump’s 16 rivals for the Republican nomination, became a subject of ridicule after he reached for water while making sure to keep staring at the camera.

Trump seized on the opportunity to belittle his opponent. At a rally in Fort Worth, Texas, the real-estate tycoon asked his supporters. “Do you remember that catastrophe? And he’s like this – ‘And we will ... I need water, help me, I need water. Help!’ This is on live television. This total choke artist.” Rubio got revenge this week. Comparing Wednesday’s episode at the White House with his much-mocked search for water, the senator jokingly tweeted: “Similar, but needs work on his form. Has to be done in one single motion & eyes should never leave the camera. But not bad for his 1st time.”

At one point in the presidential race, Rubio was rising in the polls and beginning to look like a serious threat to the front-running New York City businessman. Trump responded to the challenge by dismissing the senator as “Little Marco” on Twitter and at campaign events. Rubio fired back by accusing Trump of having “small hands,” adding: “You know what that means.” Clearly shaken by the implied impugning of his manhood, Trump told reporters there was “no problem” with the size of any part of his anatomy.

Rubio eventually dropped out of the race, helping to clear the way for Trump to capture the GOP nomination and score an upset victory over Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
