Television Host Apologizes For Profane Tweet - Criticizes Trump's Response To London Attacks

Saturday night’s horrifying terror attack in London sparked a whole host of reactions on social media. While the majority of posts were aimed at expressing shock and sadness or calls for tougher actions against terrorists, others were complete and utter nonsense that called into question the maturity level of the author. CNN analyst Reza Aslan won the night in that regard, as he decided the best course of action was to go with the shock-and-awe factor while expressing disagreement with President Donald Trump.

Shortly after the attack, the president hopped on social media to share some thoughts.

“We need to be smart, vigilant and tough. We need the courts to give us back our rights. We need the Travel Ban as an extra level of safety!” Trump wrote.

Trump’s statement - and the wisdom of posting it so soon after the attack - are certainly open for debate. While many observers feel the president is spot on with his assessment, there are many others that disagree vehemently. That’s perfectly fine, as a democracy is intended to revolve around an exchanging of ideas, debating about them, and coming up with a solution that works for all.

A debate over Trump’s remarks is to be expected, and it’s even welcome. However, there’s a way to go about things, and laying into the president with terms of derision is not it.

“This piece of s*** is not just an embarrassment to America and a stain in the presidency. He’s an embarrassment to humankind,” Aslan shared.

There’s a lot to unpack there, but we’ll start with the obvious one. Really? This is how a network analyst decides to express himself on social media? This is unbelievably cringeworthy for a boatload of reasons, and it raises some serious questions about whether Aslan should be afforded a forum on CNN to express his views.

That being said, Aslan is perfectly entitled to express his disagreement with Trump’s statement. But did he really need to do it in such a crass manner? Is there not such a thing as respect for the office of the president anymore? Why did he not stay off social media for the remainder of the evening after making a complete buffoon of himself?

“Translation: the president is a man baby that must be ignored in times of crisis,” he later wrote.

For Aslan’s part, he has apologized, and it doesn’t appear as if the episode has affected his standing with CNN.

“I should not have used a profanity to describe the President when responding to his shocking reaction to the London Attacks. When in the first few minutes of the terror attack in London, the President of the United States tweeted about his travel ban, I lost my cool and responded to him in a derogatory fashion,” he said. “That's not like me. I should have used better language to express my shock and frustration at the president's lack of decorum and sympathy for the victims of London. I apologize for my choice of words.”

Aslan expressed himself quite nicely there, but that only further calls into question how he could possibly click submit after writing something so outlandish. Losing your cool happens to the best of us, but there is such a thing as walking away from the keyboard or putting the mobile device down until you’re calm enough to express yourself as an adult.
