Spicer On 'Deep State' Claims: Obama Allies "Burrowed Into Government"

The Trump administration is accusing government employees hired by former President Obama of seeking to undermine the new regime, Yahoo News reported.

On Friday, a reporter for the website asked White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer whether a “deep state” exists. Yahoo News defined the term as “a shadowy network of staffers at military and intelligence agencies who work to influence the government.”

Spicer responded: “Well, I think that there’s no question when you have eight years of one party in office that there are people who stay in government … and continue to espouse the agenda of the previous administration. So, I don’t think it should come as any surprise that there are people that burrowed into government during eight years of the last administration and, you know, may have believed in that agenda and want to continue to seek it. I don’t think that should come as a surprise to anyone.”

Trump is furious at government whistleblowers who have leaked embarrassing information about the administration, including evidence of numerous officials’ links to Russia. The president also is persisting in his unsubstantiated claim that Obama wiretapped Trump Tower last year.

The Washington Post reported that “many” members of the administration have used the “deep state” phrase. Chief strategist Steve Bannon, who formerly ran the alt-right website Breitbart News, has “spoken with Trump at length about his view that the ‘deep state’ is a direct threat to his presidency,” according to the newspaper. Bannon told those attending last month’s Conservative Political Action Conference that Trump is dedicated to the “deconstruction of the administrative state.”

In February, Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky declared on CNN that “it’s really the deep state versus the president.” Fox News’ Sean Hannity presented in a show titled “Purging the Deep State” on Thursday night. He urged Trump to “act right now” by firing the whistleblowers and “end the leaks that are plaguing this administration.” Hannity later wrote that “deep-state Obama holdovers embedded like barnacles in the federal bureaucracy are hell-bent on destroying President Trump.”
