Sources Say That Trump Will Hire Private Attorney To Deal With Russia Probe

The president is hiring his own lawyer to defend him against any criminal charges that may result from investigations of the Trump campaign’s alleged collusion with Russian operatives to influence the outcome of last year’s election.

CNN, citing sources close to the president, reported that longtime Trump attorney Marc Kasowitz will represent him. The attorney also defended the real-estate mogul from charges that Trump University defrauded students. Trump settled the case by paying more than $20 million to the plaintiffs. Kasowitz also was retained when Trump sued the author of a book for disputing his billionaire status. A judge dismissed the argument that the writer defamed Trump by calling him a mere multimillionaire. The Kasowitz Benson Torres law firm boasts on its website that it has represented Trump on a “wide range of litigation matters for over 15 years.” Kasowitz also served as legal counsel for a Kremlin-controlled Russian bank, according to MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow.

The decision to retain Kasowitz again is a result of increasing pressure on Trump for his links to Russia. Some Democrats are calling for impeachment proceedings, while others are waiting for the FBI, Justice Department and various congressional committees to complete their investigations. According to CNN, the administration’s lawyers are preparing to defend Trump from impeachment.

Kasowitz may have a conflict of interest involving former Sen. Joseph Lieberman, who is a senior counsel for the attorney’s law firm. Trump is reportedly considering Lieberman to succeed former FBI Director James Comey, whom he fired earlier this month.

The president’s critics are enraged that Comey apparently lost his job because Trump wanted to thwart the bureau’s investigation of his campaign team. The president admitted in an NBC News interview, as well as during a May 10 meeting with Russia’s foreign minister and U.S. ambassador in the Oval Office, that he wanted the probe to end.

Comey claimed last week that in February, the president pressured him to stop the FBI’s investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who was forced to resign because of his Russian connections. Flynn received payments from Russia and the Turkish government. Trump says Democrats upset about losing the election are behind the collusion allegations.

The Washington Post reported that on Tuesday, former CIA Director John Brennan told the House Intelligence Committee there were multiple contacts between Trump campaign officials and the Russians during the 2016 race. He said U.S. intelligence agents uncovered sufficient information to warrant the FBI investigation. The Post also learned that a White House adviser is under investigation for collusion.
