Sharpton Not Happy With Ivanka's White House Role, People Furious Over His Comments

Ivanka Trump uprooted her family, stepped down from running her businesses and moved to Washington D.C. so that she and her husband, Jared Kushner, could act as advisors to her father, President Donald Trump. Last week, the Reverend Al Sharpton challenged Ivanka's presence, likening her to the Obama girls.

Sharpton criticized the President for allowing his daughter to get special treatment in the White House, which includes an office in the West Wing, security clearance, and the ability to sit in on meetings with world leaders.

"Giving [an] office on the West Wing of Ivanka Trump, somebody explain to me how you can give security clearance, access to classified material, and [an] office to somebody that don't have a title or job?" Sharpton asked. "They say now she ain't got no title. She ain't got no role. We ain't payin' her no money. But she can see everything classified."

Ms. Trump has offered her services as advisor to her father for free, so she won't be drawing any salary, nor will she be taking any oath of office. She won't even have a title. While some see this as a selfless act of patriotism (mostly conservatives), others (mostly liberals) are alarmed at the access Ivanka will have to sensitive information, despite the fact that she doesn't even actually work for the U.S. government.

“Our view is that the conservative approach is for Ivanka to voluntarily comply with the rules that would apply if she were a government employee, even though she is not, “attorney and ethics adviser for Ivanka Trump, Jamie Gorelick. “The White House Counsel’s Office agrees with that approach.”

“If President Barack Obama had given his daughters or his mother-in-law an office and some access to classified documents and cleared security status, they would have run him and everybody else out (of) the White House,” said Sharpton.

While it might be true that giving Malia and Sasha an office in the West Wing when they were respectively ages 10 and seven would have caused outrage, but Ivanka Trump is an educated, successful woman who is herself old enough to be President. Her presence as a working woman in the White House is more akin to when Hillary Clinton became the first 'working' first lady, who also was given a West Wing office when she assisted her husband on health care.
