Senator Inhofe Wants To Add Religious Freedom Amendment To The Budget

As the federal budget resolution gets on its way, Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Oklahoma) decided to add several amendments, including one that would allow discrimination of gay people based upon religion.

Recently, a similar "religious freedom" bill was signed into law by Indiana Governor Mike Pence. Senator Inhofe's amendment does not specifically mention LGBT people. Yet, this amendment would undermine a previous executive order by President Obama that prevents federally contracted companies from discriminating from LGBT employees.

Sen. Inhofe's amendment states that those who discriminate against gay people (due to religious beliefs) are being discriminated against by the federal government. On Sen. Inhofe's website it states, "Amendment 381 would seek to prevent the federal government from discriminating against individuals, businesses or organizations based on their sincerely held religious beliefs regarding abortion or marriage."

Sen. Inhofe also added:

"Under policies enacted by the Obama Administration, many religious organizations and individuals have grown concerned that they will be discriminated against by the federal government based on their religious beliefs...My amendment helps to protect the constitutional right for an individual, business, or organization to peacefully and freely adhere to their religious beliefs."
