Senate Budget Plan Would Cut $5.1 Trillion in Spending

The Republican budget package that the Senate approved Friday morning would slash government spending by $5.1 trillion over the coming decade.

The legislation calls for balancing the budget, increasing military spending, repealing Obamacare, and cutting funding for education and health care, The Huffington Post reported. A similar spending plan passed the House of Representatives on Wednesday.

The Senate’s 52-46 vote followed 15 hours of debate. Lawmakers considered 60 amendments to the bill late Thursday and early Friday. Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Ted Cruz of Texas, who are running for the GOP presidential nomination, were the only Republicans who opposed the plan.

"I believe the work we’ve done this week to boost our nation’s economy, support our national defense and expand opportunity for hard-working families is truly work worth doing," Budget Committee Chairman Mike Enzi, R-Wyo. said on the Senate floor after the vote.

The plan calls for an additional $38 billion to be appropriated to the Overseas Contingency Operations fund, increasing the Pentagon’s budget to $612 billion in the next fiscal year, according to HuffPost.
The news site explained that the budget is a non-binding “spending framework,” rather than a law the president can veto.
