Sen Scott: ‘Government is Not the Answer’ to Police Violence, Conflicts

Federal lawmakers acting alone lack the power to bridge the divide between police officers and black citizens, according to Sen. Tim Scott.

“There is obviously no single solution here,” the South Carolina Republican said during a speech on the Senate floor. “Believe it or not, the government is not the answer to what ails us.” He called for more community policing and better training for officers, in addition to congressional action, according to Roll Call.

The police should wear body cameras because recording confrontations provides “a much better chance of understanding the situation from all sides,” according to Scott.

Referring to his recently deceased cotton-farmer grandfather, the African-American senator remarked: “From cotton to Congress in one lifetime, we are a beautiful nation. We must remember that we are one single family. We can all get to where we’re going.” Scott credited his mother and an employer who helped him rise out of poverty. “My life story is a story of second chances; a love story of sorts,” he said. “It’s a dark hour in race relations for America, but I bring you hope.”

Scott’s comments were in response to the recent fatal shootings of black men in Minnesota and Louisiana by white police officers, and the gunning down of five cops in Dallas, Texas, by an African-American man.
