Scott Walker Ends His Presidential Run By Indirectly Criticizing Donald Trump

On Monday, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker officially ended his campaign for president. He had an early rise, but also a rapid fall in the GOP race. During a brief 6 p.m. ET press conference in Madison, Wis., Walker said "Today I feel I am being called to lead by helping to clear the field so that a positive, conservative message can rise to the top of the field." Walker seemed to be referencing Donald Trump, although he did not mention him by name. Walker's exit leaves 15 in the GOP presidential field. Earlier this month, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry also departed the GOP presidential race.

Walker went on to say "I encourage other Republican presidential candidates to consider doing the same so the voters can focus on a limited number of candidates who can offer a positive conservative alternative to the current front-runner. This is fundamentally important to the future of the party and, ultimately, to the future of our country." At the beginning of his campaign, he started out as the front-runner. By the time he officially launched his campaign on July 13, Donald Trump was already on the rise--along with other political outsiders. Walker then had mixed reviews on the campaign trail and stumbled with the press. Over the weekend, a CNN/ORC poll showed Walker not even registering 1 percent nationally. On Monday, Walker's New Hampshire co-chairman had already defected to the campaign of Florida Sen. Marco Rubio. As a result, Walker did not see a clear path moving forward.
