Sarah Palin Defends ‘Appeal to Heaven’ Flag at Courthouse

The Confederate flag is not the only banner being removed from public places, Sarah Palin wrote in an op-ed for Breitbart News.

The former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee said a flag that flies below the U.S. stars and stripes at the Bradley County Courthouse in Arkansas also has come under attack.

The flag is controversial because it bears the words “Appeal to Heaven.” The Freedom From Religion Foundation, citing the separation of church and state, called on Judge Keith Neely to have the banner removed. The group threatened to file a lawsuit, according to Palin, so the county attorney advised Neely to comply with the request.

“The ATH flag has a rich history, being first commissioned by George Washington to fly over Navy schooners during the Revolutionary War,” Palin wrote. “Washington knew the colonies needed God’s intervention as they battled for freedom. They had no recourse but to call on God. The appeal to heaven ultimately granted America freedom. This is our foundation! And the few who disdain this foundation want the innocent but illustrious flag removed.”

She charged that “the angry opposition” to the flag comes from “those refusing to acknowledge the truth, that the patriots of old knew America’s hope for freedom was rooted in God.”
