Sanders Rips Trump’s Agreement To Save U.S. Jobs

Sen. Bernie Sanders believes the deal that Donald Trump and Mike Pence made with Carrier Corp. may cost more U.S. jobs than it saves, The Huffington Post reported.

“Trump has endangered the jobs of workers who were previously safe in the United States,” the Vermont lawmaker wrote this week in an op-ed for The Washington Post. “Why? Because he has signaled to every corporation in America that they can threaten to offshore jobs in exchange for business-friendly tax benefits and incentives.”

Sanders argued that giving Carrier Corp. a break on its state taxes in Indiana sets a dangerous precedent, even though the concession is apparently what it took to stop the HVAC manufacturer from moving about 1,000 jobs to Mexico. “The incentives offered by the state were an important consideration,” the company acknowledged in a written statement, adding that it is excited about the prospects of a more pro-corporate presidential administration taking office in January.

Sanders, pointing out that other employers are still planning to ship jobs overseas, wrote: “It is not good enough to save some of these jobs. Trump made a promise that he would save all these jobs, and we cannot rest until an ironclad contract is signed to ensure that all of these workers are able to continue working in Indiana without having their pay or benefits slashed.”

HuffPost reported that the United Steelworkers, which represents the 1,000 Indiana workers whose jobs are at stake, is supporting the deal. However, union officials want to learn more details.
