Sanders: If Trump Has The Guts To Stand Up To Big Corporations, He Has An Ally With Me

While many of Bernie Sanders’ political views contrast sharply with those of Donald Trump, the Vermont senator suggested Thursday that he might be able to find some common ground with the president-elect.

Sanders reminded his audience at a breakfast event hosted by the Christian Science Monitor that Trump has pledged to represent working people and fight big-business interests. “If Mr. Trump has the guts to stand up to those corporations, he will have an ally with me,” the senator proclaimed.

CNN pointed out that although Sanders is a self-described democratic socialist and Trump is a conservative businessman, both men are “populists” with some similar positions. Each of them has expressed support for safeguarding the future of Social Security and Medicare, letting government officials negotiate lower prices for prescription medications, boosting the national minimum wage to at least $10 per hour, charging corporations a tariff for moving jobs to other countries, and reviving the Glass-Steagall Act to regulate Wall Street firms.

One of Trump’s challenges will be persuading members of his own party to agree with him on such matters. House Speaker Paul Ryan said recently that he opposes the tariff plan. He told CNN that the priority should be tax reform, “not tariffs; not trade wars.”

Sanders, who competed with Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination, endorsed the former secretary of state after he dropped out of the race. The senator campaigned on her behalf, urging his supporters to turn out at the polls for his former rival. He now must work with Trump if he is to advance his progressive agenda in Congress.
