Ryan Calls Trump’s Comment Targeting Clinton A ‘Bad Joke’

House Speaker Paul Ryan said Tuesday night that Donald Trump’s remark about “Second Amendment people” needing to take action against Hillary Clinton “sounds like a joke gone bad,” Newsmax reported.

Just hours earlier, the Republican presidential nominee told his supporters at a campaign rally in North Carolina: “Hillary wants to essentially abolish the Second Amendment. If she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people — maybe there is, I don’t know.”

Many Democrats and political pundits interpreted the comment as a suggestion that gun-rights advocates might assassinate the Democratic nominee if she wins the election in November. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., called the statement a “death threat” by a “pathetic coward.”

Reporters attending Ryan’s press conference, after he easily won Tuesday’s Republican primary in Wisconsin over challenger Paul Nehlen, asked the speaker about the latest controversy involving Trump. “I’ve been a little busy,” Ryan said, according to Politico. Turning serious, he added: “It sounds like a joke gone bad. You should never joke about that. I hope he clears it up quickly.”

Ryan has endorsed his party’s presidential candidate, but recently explained that his support is not a “blank check.” He vowed to speak out when Trump makes comments contrary to traditional Republican positions. Though the speaker has called the billionaire businessman a racist, he continues to resist calls to rescind his endorsement.
