Ryan Accuses Democrats of Pushing Gun Control Just to Raise Money

The Democrats’ tactic of staging sit-ins on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives to demand gun-control legislation is nothing more than a “fundraising scheme,” according to the chamber’s top Republican.

The Hill reported that House Speaker Paul Ryan accused the minority party of exploiting mass shootings like the recent massacre at an Orlando, Fla., nightclub to rake in campaign contributions. He showed reporters emails from Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California, Georgia Rep. John Lewis and others Democrats, asking their supporters to donate money in the fight for further restrictions on gun ownership.

“They are not trying to get this done through regular order,” Ryan said during his weekly news conference. “No, instead they are staging protests, they are trying to get on TV, they are sending out fundraising solicitations like this one. One of the emails stated, ‘House Democrats on the House floor. Your contribution will go to the DCCC, $15.’ This one says, ‘Try giving us $25, but if you want you can send us $50, $100, $250, $500, $1000.’ Because look at what we’re doing on the House floor, send us money. If this is not a political stunt, then why are they trying to raise money off of this, off of a tragedy?”

Ryan called on Democrats to abandon their sit-ins and employ more traditional methods of advancing legislation. “We have a process for this,” he said. “This is the people's house, this is Congress, the House of Representatives, the oldest democracy in the world, and they're descending it into chaos. This isn’t a proud moment for democracy or for the people who staged these stunts.”
