Rubio Strongly Suggests He Prefers Cruz To Trump

Marco Rubio sort of endorsed Ted Cruz for president on Tuesday, according to multiple news outlets.

When conservative radio-show host Mark Levin asked Rubio whom the Republican Party should nominate at July’s national convention in Cleveland, Ohio, the Florida senator replied: “I hope that they’ll nominate a conservative. The only one that fits that criteria is Ted Cruz.”

Rubio dropped out of the GOP race after failing to win his home state’s primary. However, he earned 172 convention delegates, more than anyone other than Donald Trump and Ted Cruz. The only other contender still actively campaigning, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, is in fourth place.

USA Today pointed out that Rubio could still capture the nomination, if Trump does not amass the 1,237 delegates necessary to secure victory on the delegates’ first ballot. An open, or contested, convention could feature multiple balloting, resulting in someone other than the front-running billionaire businessman becoming the party’s standard-bearer in November’s general election.

Polls indicate that either of the Democratic candidates, Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders, would defeat Trump by a wide margin. Cruz, Rubio and Kasich have better numbers against the Democrats.

When Trump recently suggested he might pick Rubio as his running mate, the senator responded: “I’m not going to be the vice president.”
