Rubio Says Iran Deal Endangers Americans

Republican White House hopeful Marco Rubio on Sunday blasted President Obama for releasing Iran’s frozen assets, as part of the nuclear agreement the United States and others negotiated with the Middle Eastern country.

Referring to the recent incident in which American sailors were temporarily detained after they ventured into Iranian waters, Rubio declared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that “our enemies now know that if you can capture an American, you can get something meaningful in exchange for it.” He alleged that the president has placed “a price on the head of every American abroad.”

On the same day the United States and European Union released billions of dollars in Iranian assets, the country freed five American hostages. The administration argued that the prisoner swap was possible because the nuclear deal ushered in a new era of cooperation between the two nations.

During the “Meet the Press” interview, conducted before the prisoner-release announcement, Rubio was asked how he would get the Americans out of Iran. He responded: “It will be like Ronald Reagan, where as soon as he took office, the hostages were released from Iran. We would have given them sanctions, crippling sanctions. … There would have never even been a discussion on these deals until they were released. Iran needs more from us than we need from them. We need to remind ourselves of that.”
