Rubio Predicts Democrats Would Beat Trump in November

Marco Rubio warned his fellow Republicans on Monday that the party is doomed to lose this year’s general election if Donald Trump is its nominee.

The Florida senator told the crowd at a campaign rally in Reno, Nev., that the New York City real-estate tycoon cannot be victorious in a contest against Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders because many Republicans, as well as Democrats, do not support him.

“We can’t win if we nominate someone, if we nominate someone that half of the Republican Party hates,” Rubio said. “We are going to be fighting against each other all the way to November. I don’t care how much you may think they’re funny or how interesting they may sound. If we nominate someone that 40 to 50 percent of our party can’t stand, we are going to lose.”

The comments reflect the concerns of many GOP leaders and officials, who fear that the bombastic billionaire has alienated too many voters for him to become the next president. After finishing second to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in the Iowa caucuses on Feb. 1, Trump has won every contest. He easily defeated his rivals in the New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries, as well as Tuesday’s caucuses in Nevada.

Since Jeb Bush and others dropped out of the race, Rubio has emerged as the “establishment” candidate, despite his Tea Party roots and conservative views. However, the senator has failed to win anywhere and trails in the polls in every state.
