Romney Won’t Run For President Despite His Family’s Pleading

Some of Mitt Romney’s family members want him to run for president again, this time as an independent candidate, the 2012 Republican nominee revealed Wednesday in a CBS News interview.

“I got an email from one of my sons yesterday that said, ‘You've got to get in, Dad. You've got to get in,’” Romney told the network, according to Politico. Apparently referring to presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, he explained that his family is “concerned about the direction of the nominating process in our party.”

However, Newsmax reported that Romney insisted he has no intention of throwing his hat into the ring so “late in the process.” He told interviewer John Dickerson: “I just don't think in good conscience that I'm the right person to run as long as there was a better alternative; who had a better chance of winning, rather. Once the nomination was locked up, I didn't see a chance of winning that was realistic.”

Romney pointed out that a presidential campaign “is hard on family; it’s hard on your spouse sitting there in debates just agonizing over what you’re going to say next, or what your kids have to go through, or your grandkids go through.”

While acknowledging he has considered an independent White House bid “from time to time,” Romney claimed to not be interested in serving as a mere “spoiler” who has no chance of winning the election. Political pundits predict that a conservative third-party candidate would draw votes away from the Republican nominee, effectively handing the presidency to Democrat Hillary Clinton.
