Romney Accuses Clinton of Politicizing Baltimore Riots

Mitt Romney alleged Monday that Hillary Clinton is taking advantage of the rioting in Baltimore “to get more support in the African-American community,” The Huffington Post reported.

"I was concerned that her comments really smacked of the politicization of the terrible tragedies that are going on there,” the former Massachusetts governor and 2012 Republican presidential nominee said. He was referring to Clinton’s remarks during a speech last week at Columbia University.

"There is something wrong when more than one out of every three young black men in Baltimore cannot find a job,” the former secretary of state said. “There is something wrong when trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve breaks down as far as it has in many of our communities. Without the mass incarceration that we currently practice, millions fewer people would be living in poverty."

Romney, appearing on Fox News, responded:

"We don't have mass incarcerations in America. Individuals are brought before tribunals, and they have counsel, they're given certain rights. Are we not going to lock people up who commit crimes, is that what she's suggesting?"

He called Clinton's comments "very inappropriate" and "political in nature."

Clinton continues to hold a large lead in polls of Democratic voters, as she campaigns for the party’s presidential nomination. Romney insists he will be a candidate in 2016.
