Republicans Wary of Trump’s Controversial Proposals in Clinton Speech

Donald Trump continues to upset mainstream Republicans with policy proposals that often contradict the party’s traditional issue positions.

However, according to Politico, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee received some praise for his Wednesday night speech slamming Hillary Clinton, the apparent Democratic standard bearer.

Some Republican insiders were pleased that Trump read a prepared speech to make the case against his probable general-election opponent. He cited Clinton’s use of a private email server as secretary of state, and her stances on issues ranging from the economy to foreign affairs.

“There was a lot to like. He did an effective job of connecting Hillary Clinton to the Washington cartel that is the insiders’ game and effectively connected her to her record,” said Rick Tyler, Sen. Ted Cruz’s former communications director. “He effectively gave the voters a choice between more of the same, anemic job growth versus a new vision.” However, Tyler added: “I don't think he’s ideologically steeped in how economies work.”

Politico noted that many Republicans were upset that Trump repeated his opposition to international trade agreements like the Trans-Pacific Partnership. “This is a populist speech. It speaks for a faction of the Republican Party, but it certainly does not speak for most people who have considered themselves economic conservatives,” said Eli Lehrer, president of the R Street Institute think tank. “NAFTA and free-trade agreements like it are key to the open and competitive economy that conservatives have traditionally favored.”
