Republicans Slam ‘Weak’ Paul Ryan For Allowing Democratic Sit-In

The sit-in that Democrats in the House of Representatives staged this week to advocate gun-control legislation prompted some Republicans to criticize Speaker Paul Ryan.

Breitbart News reported that the GOP members slammed their leader for allowing the demonstration to continue for nine hours. One unidentified source on Capitol Hill told the conservative website: “Ryan was so weak; he just let them take over.”

Neither Ryan nor any other top House Republican was in attendance when the sit-in started. The speaker missed the session because he was making a speech at the American Enterprise Institute.

Breitbart’s source argued that Republicans could have joined in the debate. “Nobody locked the doors, nobody shut off the lights and nobody did anything to keep food off the floor or to keep people from coming and going,” he said. Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, a leader of her party’s progressive faction, supported House Democrats by providing doughnuts and coffee during the sit-in.

The chamber’s GOP majority officially terminated the session, which ended C-SPAN’s coverage. The Democrats then violated House rules by employing Twitter’s Periscope to livestream the proceedings. Republicans did not want to escalate the protest by having anyone removed and arrested, but Ryan could have taken some action, according to the source.
