Republicans Demand Probe Of Clintons' Role In Uranium Deal

The Uranium One controversy is further evidence that Bill and Hillary Clinton get preferential treatment, according to Congressman Matt Gaetz.

The Florida Republican declared this week that voters are “sick” of the former first family getting away with wrongdoing, Fox News reported. Gaetz and others have accused Hillary Clinton of endangering the nation’s security by making a pay-for-play deal with the Russians. In return for donations to the Clinton Foundation and lavish speaking fees for her husband, she allegedly used her power as secretary of state to help push through a transaction involving the Canadian firm Uranium One.

The State Department was one of multiple federal offices that approved the sale of majority interest in Uranium One to Russia’s nuclear-energy agency. The Kremlin gained control of uranium mines in Wyoming and Utah that reportedly represent 20 percent of the United States’ uranium-production capacity. Clinton insists that she was not personally involved in the negotiations for the deal.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions told a congressional committee this week that he had not seen sufficient grounds for an investigation. Gaetz disagreed, arguing that there are several reasons to go after Clinton. He said she deserves scrutiny for her presidential campaign having funded Fusion GPS to compile incriminating information about Donald Trump.

Many of the details uncovered by the research company ended up in the dossier that a former British spy created. The document accused Trump of having made business deals with the Russians. It also featured the lurid allegation that the real-estate mogul met with prostitutes in a Moscow hotel room. The president had denied the charges.

Anti-Trump Republicans initially paid Fusion GPS for its research regarding Trump. Following the Republican National Convention, the Clinton campaign took over the payments. “If that doesn’t warrant investigation … I don’t know what does," Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio said. Gaetz declared that the issue is another case of there being “one set of rules for Clintons and one set for everybody else.”

In an op-ed that Fox News published on Monday, Gaetz and Jordan asked: “Why in 2016 did FBI Director James Comey call the Clinton investigation a ‘matter,’ not an investigation? After all, Mr. Comey wasn’t director of the Federal Bureau of Matters. Why in 2016 did FBI Director Comey begin drafting an exoneration letter for Secretary Clinton, whom he called ‘grossly negligent’ in an early draft of the letter, before completing the investigation? Before interviewing several witnesses? And before interviewing Secretary Clinton?”

The lawmakers continued: “Why in 2016 did James Comey and the Justice Department give Cheryl Mills, Secretary Clinton’s chief of staff, an immunity agreement for turning over her laptop computer? Typically, the department would issue a subpoena or get a warrant and seize it. Why in this case did the FBI agree to destroy the laptop? Why in 2016 — one day before the Benghazi report was released and five days before Secretary Clinton was interviewed by the FBI — did Attorney General Lynch meet with former President Clinton on the tarmac in Phoenix?”
