Republican VP Nominee Praises Dick Cheney

Mike Pence suggested Sunday that if he becomes vice president, he will follow the example set by George W. Bush’s second-in-command.

“I frankly hold Dick Cheney in really high regard in his role as vice president and as an American,” Donald Trump’s running mate said on “This Week” on ABC News. “Vice President Cheney had experience in Congress, as I do, and he was very active in working with members of the House and the Senate.”

According to Newsmax, Pence vowed to be “a very active vice president.” He praised previous occupants of the office, including Cheney, who were “able to take the vision of the president and champion that on Capitol Hill.” The Indiana governor added: “I would hope that my relationships over my 12 years in Congress and my four years here as governor of Indiana would help carry Donald Trump’s vision to ‘make America great again’ to people who would be crafting the legislation to put that into practice.”

On another topic, Pence backed up Trump’s recent ridiculing of Robert Gates. “The simple truth is that during his tenure as secretary of defense, Secretary Gates was part of the Obama administration’s handling of U.S. withdrawal from Iraq,” the vice-presidential nominee said.

He continued: “The way that we got out without renegotiating a status-of-forces agreement, without leaving any combat forces in Iraq, created a vacuum in which the ISIS caliphate was able to rise up and compromise large areas of Iraq to this very day that were hard-fought and won by the sacrifices of American soldiers. I understand that Secretary Gates may not want to hear that, but the American people know it’s true.”
