Republican Strategist Critiques: What If Hillary Had Given Intel To Russians?

Republicans have a double standard about the handling of classified government information when it comes to President Trump and Hillary Clinton, according to Ana Navarro.

Yahoo News reported that the CNN commentator responded Monday to Trump’s decision to give intelligence documents about ISIS to Russian officials. At least some of the information was “highly classified,” according to The Washington Post. Trump admitted on Twitter that he handed over the material during Monday’s Oval Office meeting with the Russian foreign minister and ambassador. He called for cooperation between the two countries in the fight against ISIS.

Navarro, a conservative Republican operative who has opposed Trump since last year’s campaign, lashed out at GOP leaders on Capitol Hill. She ridiculed them for defending the president’s sharing of classified information, after having criticized Clinton for her email practices. “If Hillary Clinton leaked classified info to a Russian spook/diplomat, Republicans would rightly be drafting articles of impeachment N-O-W,” Navarro tweeted. “Pic of missing spine of most GOP elected leaders should be on side of milk cartons. Last seen Oct 2016. Abducted by a man wearing a red tie.”

Chris Matthews, a political talk-show host on MSNBC, agreed. “The almost crazy irony of this is that it’s what the Republicans tied around Hillary Clinton’s neck for a couple of years about her email, saying that by using a private server, she would expose highly classified information to the world,” he said. “In this case, (Trump is) giving it to the Russians first hand.”

Steve Schmidt, a Republican strategist, accused his party of “a real dereliction of duty” and cited Trump’s “ineptitude” and “dishonesty” during an appearance on Matthews’ show. Schmidt called the information-sharing incident “shocking.”

The controversy has added fuel to the fire concerning the administration’s links to Russia. Trump has frequently praised the long-time U.S. adversary’s strongman leader, Vladimir Putin. Numerous members of the president’s campaign team and administration, including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, have Russian connections. Former national security adviser Michael Flynn was forced to resign due to his contacts with Russia’s ambassador to the United States last year.
