Report: Obama Official Admits Previous Administration Dropped Ball On Russian Election Meddling

Breaking news: there’s a new report making the rounds from a mainstream media publication in relation to Russia, and this one stunningly has nothing to do with President Donald Trump. However, the report is heavy on quotes from anonymous sources, so at least it keeps that streak alive. As The Hill shares, Obama administration officials have been quoted as saying that the old band was horribly off key when it comes to Russia.

The official notes that the administration took a slow and steady approach to reports that the Kremlin may have been meddling in the 2016 presidential election, and that proved to be a big mistake.

“It is the hardest thing about my entire time in government to defend. I feel like we sort of choked,” said one official.

“I don’t think any of us thought of sanctions as being a primary way of expressing our disapproval,” said another official. “Going after their intelligence services was not about economic impact. It was symbolic. The punishment did not fit the crime. Russia violated our sovereignty, meddling in one of our most sacred acts as a democracy - electing our president."

That’s all fascinating stuff, but the fact remains that there is zero evidence that a single vote was changed as a result of alleged Russian interference. That’s zero as in none, zip, nada.

"The Kremlin should have paid a much higher price for that attack," the official continued. "And U.S. policymakers now - both in the White House and Congress - should consider new actions to deter future Russian interventions.”

Fair enough. It’s a matter that should be taken quite seriously. The sanctity of our elections is one of the things that helps separate our nation from the pack, and it would be scary to think what it would be like without that happening. That being said, the preponderance of ‘hacking’ stories are coming across as tremendously overblown, especially when not a single vote was proved to be changed. A spokesman for former President Obama has chimed in to assure us that all was well on his watch.

“This situation was taken extremely seriously, as is evident by President Obama raising this issue directly with President Putin; 17 intelligence agencies issuing an extraordinary public statement; our homeland security officials working relentlessly to bolster the cyber defenses of voting infrastructure around the country; the President directing a comprehensive intelligence review, and ultimately issuing a robust response including shutting down two Russian compounds, sanctioning nine Russian entities and individuals, and ejecting 35 Russian diplomats from the country,” the spokesman said in a statement.

Alright. So that should be the end of it. But it won’t be. There’s an absolute obsession with Russian interference in the election. Despite the fact that no votes were changed. Perhaps someday we’ll get some clarity on that, but then we’ll have to worry about whether or not that is fake news that has really emanated from the Russian government. Besides, no voter would be smart enough to see past that, right?
