Report: First Couple Compare White House Life To Venezuelan Jail

As we all know, one person’s trash is another’s treasure. The same holds true in the opposite fashion as well, and some of the examples can be truly eye-popping. Reports are making the rounds that we have another amazing example of that, and this one emanates from our nation’s capital. Specifically, there are some rumblings that the White House may not be up to snuff in the eye of its current occupants. This isn’t the first time that it’s been insinuated either, but it is the most astonishing way in which it has been to date.

As Business Insider shares, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump recently welcomed Lilian Tintori to the White House. Tintori is the wife of jailed Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, and she had come to the nation’s capital to discuss human rights issues. Lopez was sentenced to 14 years behind bars in 2015, and many observers view his imprisonment as the result of trumped-up charges that stem from a number of anti-government protests that took place back in 2014.

The Washington Post has somehow become aware of what took place during the meeting between the First Couple and Tintori, and it sounds like the small talk portion of the conversation was a little challenging.

“During the visit with Tintori, the president seemed unfamiliar with her and her experiences, The Post reported, though he reportedly knew enough to have 'praised her past as a reality television star in Venezuela's version of Survivor,'" Business Insider shares. “The president and the first lady also reportedly tried to commiserate with Tintori through a source of their own discomfort: the White House.”

There’s a lot to unpack there already, but additional revelations from the conversation added even more fuel to the fire.

“Melania Trump said she sympathized with what Lopez had gone through in jail in Caracas, Venezuela, adding that the White House felt as confining as prison, two people familiar with the meeting told The Post. Donald Trump reportedly agreed,” Business Insider adds. “The first lady's spokeswoman denied that she made that comment, telling The Post that Trump "only offered words of encouragement and strength."

Call us crazy, but there seem to be a lot of people familiar with conversations around the White House these days that just can’t wait to share what they’ve overheard. We’ve seen that play out an inordinate number of times since Trump took office, so we can only assume that the whole respect for confidentiality thing was glossed over during the screening process for White House employees.

In any event, we now have another piece of gossip making the rounds that suggests that the Trumps aren’t too keen on their new digs. So are they or aren’t they? We don’t know, but folks ‘familiar with the meeting’ seem pretty confident that they’re not. As for the meeting itself, Tintori is said to be pleased. Trump has been particularly outspoken against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's government lately, and he has imposed sanctions that impact the country.
