Reagan's Son Says Democrats Need 'New Life' To Beat Trump In 2020

President Trump might win a second term in office because no Democrat appears capable of defeating him, President Reagan’s eldest son argued Thursday.

During an interview with Newsmax TV, Michael Reagan said the Democrats need “new life at the top of the party.” He said they should “get rid of the old — and, in fact, bring in the new,” adding: “That’s one of the major problems the Democrat Party has. As bad as people think Trump is, there’s nobody in the Democrat Party who — in fact, today — if there were an election, could beat Donald Trump for the nomination, or the presidency.”

Reagan, a conservative radio talk-show host, acknowledged that Republicans also face challenges. “Yes, the party’s in transition, but it’s the transition from the party of Reagan to the party of Trump,” he said. “We had our time in our sun. We had our days back in the 1980s. It’s a new era, a new time — and this is becoming the party of Trump.”

The Washington Post reported last month that while “there’s no 800-pound gorilla in the field,” a number of prominent Democrats are considering presidential bids. According to the newspaper, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Vice President Joe Biden would be the front-runners if they decided to seek the party’s nomination. Either of them would be the oldest person ever elected president.

Sanders, a political independent who has always caucused with Democrats in Congress, surprised many pundits last year by mounting a serious challenge to Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries. He built a huge movement of voters by offering a progressive alternative to the former secretary of state. According to a recent poll, Sanders is the most popular politician in the country.

Biden, who said he did not run for president last year because he was still mourning the death of his son, has admitted he regrets the decision. He claims he could have won a race against Trump. According to the Post, a Biden campaign would attract white, working-class voters and enhance his party’s chances of winning in Rust Belt states.

The next possible candidate on the newspaper’s list was Chris Murphy, a progressive first-term senator from Connecticut. He is an outspoken gun-control advocate who has not minced words in criticizing Trump. He claims he has no plans to enter the 2020 race. Murphy is not nearly as well known as Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a leader of the progressive movement with millions of fans. The Post predicted that she will not seek the nomination if Sanders is running.

Another possible candidate is Jerry Brown, the 79-year-old California governor. Some Democratic strategists think he could be the toughest opponent for Trump. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York would be a much younger nominee, though she declared in May that she was “ruling out” a presidential campaign.

Others the Post mentioned included Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, California Sen. Kamala Harris, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker. A more unconventional choice, according to the newspaper, could be Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg or television celebrity Oprah Winfrey.
