Reagan: Republicans Are Forcing Trump To Reach Out To Democrats

Republicans who are upset about President Trump negotiating with Democrats only have themselves to blame, according to Michael Reagan.

In a Newsmax interview on Wednesday, the conservative radio-show host declared that GOP congressional leaders “have put themselves in the place of forcing the president to go elsewhere because he wants to make a deal.” The commentator, son of former President Ronald Reagan, explained that Trump “is not an ideologue.” He added: “He’s not really a conservative. He’s playing the role of a conservative at this point.”

The president recently reached an agreement with the top two Democrats on Capitol Hill, Sen. Charles Schumer and Rep. Nancy Pelosi. The deal provided funding to help victims of Hurricane Harvey, and raised the debt ceiling to prevent a government shutdown. On Wednesday, Trump sat down with Schumer and Pelosi again to discuss the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals immigration program, which the administration has threatened to phase out within six months. The president demanded increased funding for border security in exchange for keeping DACA in place.

Michael Reagan urged GOP leaders to work with Trump in crafting a tax-reform package, rather than allowing the Democratic leaders to make another deal with the White House. “The Republicans now are going to have to do something on taxes,” the commentator said. “I would not at this point, if I was in the Congress, I would not be waiting for the president to lead me where I want to go with tax reform. I would be doing tax reform today and make sure it gets on his desk.”

Reagan continued: “If somebody is going to stop tax reform, have it be Schumer and the Democrats instead of the Republicans fighting every day tooth and nail for their own little programs they’ve got going. Get over it. Pass tax reform. Give it to the president of the United States and start leading.”

At last report, the details of the plan to save DACA were unclear. According to CNN, it was unknown whether the deal would include money for the wall along the U.S.-Mexico border that Trump promised during his campaign. Schumer and Pelosi, who oppose the wall, indicated they would support other types of border enforcement. Their main goal is to preserve DACA, which has blocked the deportation of nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children.

Trump claimed that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan were “very much on board” with saving the program. However, Ryan claimed at a press conference that the president’s deal with Schumer and Pelosi was “a discussion, not an agreement or a negotiation.”

Trump, while visiting hurricane-ravaged Florida on Thursday, explained: “We are looking at allowing people to stay here. We are not looking at citizenship. We are not looking at amnesty. We are looking at allowing people to stay here. We are working with everybody.” The president called DACA enrollees “good, educated and accomplished young people (who) have been in our country for many years through no fault of their own.”
