Rapper Says Trump Tried To Buy His Endorsement For $500,000

Donald Trump offered 50 Cent a half-million dollars to help him get African-Americans’ votes in last year’s election, according to the rapper.

The Huffington Post reported that 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis James Jackson III, made the claim in an interview on the “Ebro in the Morning” show on New York City’s Hot 97 radio station.

“Before he got elected, they were having issues with the African-American vote. They wanted to pay me $500,000 as part of the campaign just to make an appearance, and I was like, ‘Nah, that’s not good money. I’m not gonna do that. That’s not worth it,’” the singer said. He indicated he did not regret turning down the offer.

During the White House race, Trump was able to get endorsements from only a few celebrities. Many entertainers and other famous people enthusiastically supported his opponent, Hillary Clinton. African-American stars overwhelmingly backed Clinton, partly in response to Trump’s racially charged rhetoric. No president in the previous 40 years received a lower percentage of black and Latino votes, Reuters reported.

50 Cent questioned Trump’s motives in seeking the nation’s highest office. “If you were president by accident, you might do some of the things Donald Trump is doing,” he said, according to Fox News. “I think he was (in the race) to build his profile for a bigger deal on television, and everything else. I don’t think anything has divided people as fast.”

During a 2015 interview with The Daily Beast, the rapper announced his endorsement of Clinton, who had not yet secured the Democratic Party’s nomination. “It’s Hillary time!” he proclaimed. Referring to her experience as the first lady when Bill Clinton was president, 50 Cent added: “I think Hillary was the president already once. You know what I’m sayin’? Some of the things she says feel really comfortable, and roll off. When people are really close with each other, they use each other as soundboards because they’re the other person’s best friend.”

Politico noted that 50 Cent supported Hillary Clinton early in the 2008 campaign, but later shifted his allegiance to Barack Obama. He told The Daily Beast that the first lady had impressed him with how she handled the Monica Lewinsky scandal. “It made that love between her and Bill real to me,” he said. “When you make other people feel different because of what they’ve conditioned themselves to feel about the subject, it made me look at her and think she’s made life choices that she’s willing to stand by — and in a place where people would do what they felt like other people would expect them to do, instead of going on their feelings. It’s so public that it can allow the perception of it to sway which way you can go.”

Several other rap stars also urged their fans to cast their ballots for Clinton last year. Snoop Dogg, during an appearance on Bravo, declared: “Just to have a woman speaking from a global perspective, as far as representing America, I’d love to see that. So I’ll be voting Mrs. Clinton.” Ja Rule told the Fox Business Network: “I’m a Democrat, so yeah, so I would vote Hillary.”
