Putin Directly Linked To Hacking Of DNC And Clinton Staff

Russian leader Vladimir Putin had personal involvement in the hacking of emails from the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, two unidentified U.S. intelligence sources told NBC News on Wednesday.

The Huffington Post noted that the allegation came just a few days after The Washington Post learned that the CIA believes Russian cyber attackers were attempting to influence the election in favor of Donald Trump. According to the spy agency, the hackers obtained emails from Republican politicians, as well, but gave WikiLeaks only those that might embarrass Democrats. The New York Times found that the Russians also attacked the computers of some Democratic congressional campaigns.

NBC News reported that its sources charged Putin with pursuing a “vendetta” against Clinton, whom he accused of inciting street protests following Russia’s elections in 2011. Clinton, who was secretary of state at the time, had called for “free, fair, transparent” elections. The Russian leader apparently is fond of Trump, having once called him “bright and talented.”

In addition to thwarting Clinton’s presidential ambitions, Putin also hoped to “split off key American allies by creating the image that (the rest of the world) couldn’t depend on the U.S. to be a credible global leader anymore,” one of NBC’s sources said.
