Protesters With Confederate Flags Welcome Obama to Oklahoma

President Obama got a culture shock Wednesday night in Oklahoma City, where about 10 people waved Confederate flags at him as he left his vehicle and entered a hotel.

He traveled to the Republican-leaning state to visit a federal prison as part of his campaign for criminal-justice reform, according to The Hill. The blog noted that some of those in the crowd outside the hotel expressed support for the president.

Andrew Duncomb, an African-American known as “the Black Rebel” who organized the flag-waving demonstration, told KFOR TV News that his group does “not believe (the flag) is a symbol of racism.” He added: “They’re blaming the racist problems on the flag and not on the real problems of America.”

Since photos surfaced showing the confessed killer of nine people in a South Carolina church posing with the Confederate flag, officials throughout the South have come under increased pressure to remove the banners from government property. Last week, the Confederate flag on the South Carolina Statehouse grounds came down. Officials in several other states have followed suit.

"For many, black and white, that flag was a reminder of systemic oppression and racial subjugation,” Obama said during his eulogy for one of the church victims. “We see that now.”
